There's an 8 year old in ICU right now, due to a "playground fight". Kid got his skull crashed in right good.

Oh, and we have a 14 year old being tried for not one, but two murders. Shoot-em-ups in the street murders.

Walking away, shaking my head. It's been a few years since I was eight or 14, but that kind of behavior wasn't common place. Or, maybe I've lived in a cocoon. Once again, glad I'm old.

The unfortunate thing about dumb people is that they're too dumb to know the extent of their dumbness and all to willing to demonstrate it publicly.

Five murders so far this year have been committed by minors.

As you know, this is the police's fault.

As you know, gae, I'm not exactly a small guy - I'm 6'3", and weigh 240.

On the way to the theater, I walked up Sycamore, and felt unsafe. On the way back, I walked down Main - a more pedestrian friendly street - and still felt unsafe.

Some would say I'm racist for suspiciously viewing all the loitering young black men I passed along the way.

One approached me for money. Others just stared as I walked by. Another one yelled, but I wasn't sure if it was directed at me or just a random thing.

Was I nervous? A couple times, yes.

My reasons for being nervous are legit. There are too many who've been brought up in broken homes with no direction, and give not a rat's ass about anyone or anything.

I'm not about to guess who's had proper upbringing, and who's packing heat and not afraid to use it.

Unfortunately, I did not attend the play on Alicia Reece's Day of Peace. I'll schedule better next time.

I have a BIL who works for a police dept NARC unit. I will be riding with them for a couple of nights sometime in the near future. I will report my firsthand experiences back to this board without predjudice or malice. I will report what I see. If it's all protestant church goers who are buying crack and beating up their spouses, I will report that. Fair and balanced...hehehe!!

While I'm not at all a fighter, I think my size causes people generally not to mess with me. The friend I was with, however, looked quite a bit older, was dressed waaaaay too nicely to be walking in the 'hood (I much more casual with jeans and a polo shirt), and looked like someone easy to take down.

I understand completely why people are afraid to visit Main Street.

This statement struck me when I read it this morning, because it says soooo much about the American culture in 2004. And it makes me think about Zell Miller.

To briefly recap a bio posted on a burried thread, his father died shortly after he was born and his mother raised him alone. By his own admission, it was a hellion when he was a teenager, up to the night he got thrown in the local jail.

The sherriff or chief of police (can't remember which) told him that he should get used to the view, because the way he was going, Zell would be a regular guest.

His story goes that he joined the service the next day, and finally found direction.

A name and face that proves that the cycle can be broken.

I find it interesting that at the turn of the 20th century, the literacy rate among blacks was in excess of 90%. And that the literacy rate has been declining since LBJ decided to create the Great Society.

Why bother to learn to read, or to learn a skill, or to respect yourself when the poverty pimps keep telling you that it's simply blatant racism that you can't get a job at 18 with 4th grade reading skills?
